Diabetes Awareness Week is here! From 10th – 16th June, you’ll have a unique opportunity to really make some noise and talk about diabetes with your family, friends and work colleagues. This is a time to share your “diabetes” experiences; are you diagnosed with diabetes? Do you know somebody that is? Support others effectively manage their condition, as well as make a difference to your own health by checking out some helpful resources and learning more about the various types of diabetes management solutions that are available, like blood glucose monitoring systems, insulin pen needles, glucose gels or footcare foam-creams.
Organised by Diabetes UK, one of the country’s leading diabetes charities, Diabetes Awareness Week isn’t just educational… it’s fun, too! This year, the chosen theme is “See Diabetes Differently”. Each year, we see a whole host of community events, sponsored walks/races and adrenaline-pumping challenges, all designed to help people to better cope with their condition as well as generate the essential financial resources needed to help the NHS keep researching, keep testing and keep on top of the latest advancements in essential diabetes management.
Raising awareness
While diabetes is a very common condition — it’s estimated that more than 5 million people in the UK will be diagnosed with the condition by 2025 — the impact that the disease can have on day to day life is still not fully understood by many. If we continue to turn a ‘blind eye’ and overlook the seriousness of diabetes, it’s expected that the disease will trigger a massive care crisis in the future, especially as untreated diabetes or diabetes that is managed poorly can result in life-threatening complications. E.g. Nerve damage (neuropathy), Kidney damage (nephropathy), Eye damage (retinopathy) and Foot damage.
Perhaps the best thing that we can all do right now to prevent this from happening is to raise awareness of the disease and support those living with the condition. At GlucoRx, we’re proud to be supporting Diabetes Awareness Week 2019 with several events around the country. Members of our team will be spending time talking to the general public at community pharmacies, at a shopping centre and at one of the Silver Star Mobile Diabetes Unit.
Get involved
We’d love it if you would join in offering support to this great cause and get involved in Diabetes Awareness Week 2019. Whether it’s sharing your experiences of living with the condition or participating in some of the amazing diabetes fundraising events that are being organised all around the country.
Now is the time to act. Diabetes is a manageable condition… together, we can keep it that way.
